North Lees Hall was built in 1590, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. But it really became famous because of Charlotte Bronte. She based Thornfield in Jane Eyre on North Lees. There are also rumours that there was really a mad woman in the attic in its early history, just like Bertha Mason in Bronte's novel. She even later died in a fire. Film and TV makers have returned to North Lees many times. It has appeared in the BBC's Jane Eyre and in the film The Other Boleyn Girl.

North Lees always looks splendid in the Winter, with Stanage Edge in the background - heres a photo taken looking down and slightly left of the plantation close to the Hall
