Mam Tor, the Shivering Mountain
Added by Bill Bevan
Mam Tor - the Mother Mountain or Shivering Mountain as some call it. This is a real Peak District landscape. Its hog-back ridge and dramatic landslip scar are visible for miles. What a dramatic site as it towers over the Hope Valley. It's nearly always windy on top which makes you wonder why people chose to live there 3,000 years ago and build the hillfort. You can still see ther remains of the stone walls and platforms for roundhouses. Also a great place to watch paragliders as there's usually some taking off from its top.
These people have chosen Mam Tor as one of their favourites

You wouldn't want to take a SmartCar along there now!

Here's a picture of the road destroyed by the landslip.

The Shivering Mountain is an apt name, given the landslip that destroyed the old A625 from Castleton.
